If I asked you, what is Indigo Rabbit, what would you think of? Would food manufacturer be on your list? Let me introduce you to Indigo Rabbit – secretly healthy, uncommonly good fresh baked cookies.

Who is Indigo Rabbit?

The secret behind the company is that each cookie is baked with phytonutrients from raw veggies and healthy ingredients. Yes, raw veggies! The company’s founder Sandy Foster, was challenged each and every day to get her children to eat a rainbow of colorful foods. She devised a clever way of sneaking veggies into as many foods as she could get away with – thus was Indigo Rabbit was born. Sandy has also strived to ensure the company offers a broad range of allergy-specific cookie types so that the growing number of people with food allergies can enjoy Indigo Rabbit cookie munching as well.

The Indigo Rabbit website contains info about each of their 5 products as well as their Allergen Control Program. All products are lactose free and soy free. For complete information about their allergens, click here. There is some concern amongst food allergic individuals and the community about cross contamination at Indigo Rabbit. For example, they make Heavenly Chocolate Pillows which are peanut free, yet they also make Perfectly Peanut Butter which contains peanuts. We are going to ask Sandy for clarification so stay tuned for an update on their processes and facilities.

Thanks to rose_w from twitter for sharing the knowledge about a controversy surrounding the company now regarding their allergy policy. As with any company you read about, please do your own due diligence about products, manufacturing before you purchase or try any products as listed on AllergySense or elsewhere. The controversy is taking place around the allergen policy stating that cookies are “nut free” yet there is a line of Almond cookies made in the same facility. Does this company have AllergySense? Share the knowledge – what do you think?

I would like to address the concerns raised by your reader regarding Indigo Rabbit’s product labeling practices. At Indigo Rabbit, we take food allergies very seriously.

All Indigo Rabbit products are baked in the same bakery. Good manufacturing practices (GMP’s) are used to reduce the risk of cross-contamination, including but not limited to sterilizing of machinery, line scheduling to segregate allergen and non-allergen ingredients, and line testing for gluten. Please see our website, http://indigorabbit.com/allergy-info/ for a more detailed description of our practices.

Indigo Rabbit product packaging includes ingredient statements, Contains statements, and advisory statements (“Manufactured in a facility that processes nuts wheat, eggs, milk and soy”), the latter of which are not currently mandated by the FDA.

Products are labeled “Nut Free” if they do not contain peanuts or tree nuts by formulation.

I will also address our “Gluten Free” labeling as this may be relevant to some allergysense readers. Indigo Rabbit products are labeled “Gluten Free” if they do not contain wheat, rye, barley or oats by formulation. We line test throughout production to ensure that all products labeled as such test negative for gluten. Indigo Rabbit executes such assessment even though it is not currently mandated by the FDA.

Whole Foods Markets upholds an allergy labeling guideline that extends beyond that stipulated by the FDA. Indigo Rabbit products sold in Whole Foods, therefore, do not contain the terms “Nut Free” or “Gluten Free” in order to make clear that Indigo Rabbit cookies are baked in a shared facility.

We are working toward a production-wide shift in Indigo Rabbit package labeling. Consumers who seek Nut Free and/or Gluten Free items will note that our product line has such offerings by formulation and will be able to make the best decisions for their families based on manufacturing practices, which have always been clearly defined in Indigo Rabbit marketing materials and correspondence.

The FDA is working in the right direction, but clearly not on the timetable desireable for families in the allergy community. Our efforts at Indigo Rabbit are tirelessly directed at clarifying who we are, what we do, and how all that is accomplished. I hope this information further clarifies for your readers the way we bake our extraordinary cookies, of which we are very proud.
