When you are first diagnosed with a food allergy, all of the information you receive is like information overload. You’re not sure what to listen to, what you can filter out and specifically where to start. At Allergy Sense, we know what its like to live with food allergies, and we remember what it was like to be newly diagnosed and walk out of your Allergists office with a prescription for 5 auto-injectors! Its overwhelming, scary and totally unknown. We’re here to make life easier for you! We want to introduce you to a few great, FREE services that are highly beneficial for busy families with food allergies.

It’s a great idea to register your auto-injectors so that you will receive an automated reminder through email prior to the expiry date. This service is so helpful for those who have trouble keeping track of dates. A few sites you can check out include:

Warranty Elephant – this site was originally created to track warranties and is great to help remind consumers when various products/service you own expire. After consulting with them about food allergies, they added a special section for medication including auto-injectors. Check out Warranty Elephant and register for free. The creators of this service also took our advice so you can also identify where each device is kept. For example, if the epipen in my purse is going to expire in April/10, I won’t have to look at every auto-injector I have to determine which one is going to expire. When I ge the email reminder it will include that fact that it is the device located in my purse. This feature is extremely helpful when you have multiple auto-injectors including some kept outside of your home. A few years ago, I gave a device to a teacher in September and I didn’t realize it expired in January. When I got it back at the end of the school year, I couldn’t believe that I had left expired medication at school for half of the year!

In Canada

The new EpiPen Resource Centre provides many resources and tools to help make allergy management simpler and available in one place.  Here you can register your pens for the Expiration Reminder Service.

Twinject has a program for Canada called “Be Ready” which allows individuals to register to receive email or SMS reminders to purchase a new device. You choose how far in advance you want to be reminded. Click here for details.

In the US

Twinject Refill reminder – Stay confident and protected with the Twinject Patient Reminder Program.

Epipen – Join the Center for Anaphylactic Support to use this resource created by Epipen. Here you will be able to register your epipens too to receive expiry reminders.

Regardless of which program you use to remind you about the expiry, registering your epipens is a great idea. Share this tip with a friend too! They’ll thank you for it.
